Federal Immigration Policy Enforcement

x

✔

Rumor: Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is working with Glendale Police Department by going to schools and door to door in City of Glendale.

FALSE:

Following recent federal executive actions, community members have understandably expressed concerns for their families and neighbors. In response, Chief Manny Cid reaffirmed the Glendale Police Department’s role as protectors of public safety—not as enforcers of federal immigration laws. By policy, law, and practice, the Glendale Police Department does not engage in immigration enforcement and in full compliance with California Senate Bill 54 (SB54).

The federal government has the exclusive authority to enforce the civil provisions of federal immigration law, including matters of admission, exclusion, and deportation. While current law allows federal authorities to request local assistance, local agencies are not required to participate in federal immigration enforcement efforts.

Glendale Police officers do not have the authority nor the responsibility to incarcerate or detain individuals solely based on immigration status. Our fundamental duties are based on public safety—serving the community while focusing efforts primarily on crime prevention and law enforcement.

In 2017, this issue was discussed at a City Council meeting. As a result, a staff report was prepared by the Glendale Police Department and reinforced by the City Council. On January 7, 2025, the Glendale City Council revisited the discussion, affirming the previous decision and standing.
